We can all agree that each country has its own unique points that might not be found anywhere else in the world.
In Australia, some of these features are the Australia-exclusive road signs, safety signs and other markers. Following are 10 signs only found in Australia:
1. Unmarked holes
If you happen to pass by Coober Pedy, you will find a sign that warns tourists and visitors against unmarked holes that they could fall into if they aren’t careful.
Since Coober Pedy has an entire underground city, there are open shafts scattered about to improve the air ventilation underground.
2. Learning to Fly
Only around Ross Creek Yeppoon will you be able to find a safety sign that urges drivers to drive more carefully to avoid the osprey chicks which are still learning to fly.
These birds are similar to eagles with their large size and preying properties.
3. Long Road Trains
Road trains as long as 53.5 meters are just as native to the Australian Outback as kangaroos are to the Down Under.
Due to their length, these long trains are not allowed in heavily-populated areas since they can hinder normal traffic.
4. Great Dividing Range
As seen between Kulpi and Cooyar, the Great Dividing Range is also known as the Great Divide or Eastern Highlands.
Some also refer to this place as the Eastern Cordillera, which is basically a series of low mountain ranges. This range covers a total of 2,300 miles, extending from Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.
Since it’s the world’s only Great Dividing Range, signs designating the area are only found in Oz.
5. Birds Swooping
Only in Australia can you find safety signs warning that birds might be dive-bombing towards you from the above.
Between September and November, Australia will experience the magpie riot, consisting of these feathered creatures swooping down on unsuspecting victims, both children and adults.
6. Scary Cliffs
You might see this sign if you pass by Talia Caves.
Since these coastal areas have hazards associated with cliff stability and submerged rocks, among other potential dangers, this safety sign was initiated by Surf Life Saving SA to provide a safe coastal experience.
7. Laser Radiation
Laser pointers available for sale in Australia needs to fulfill the requirement of having less than 1 milliwatt of radiant power. By staring directly into these laser lights, individuals can suffer from permanent damage to their eyes, causing them either partial or total vision loss.
8. Launceston’s Ghost Signs
No, we are not referring to signs for supernatural beings. Rather, these ghost signs are left as remnants of traditional advertising and signages before the age of billboards and digital painting.
Some of these signs can still be seen on old walls, even if they are almost faded beyond recognition.
9. Animal Warnings
Exclusively made for areas where unique Australian animals are known pass, these safety signs warn drivers to watch out for animals.
The range of wildlife is huge and includes emus, camels, koalas, wombats, kangaroos and Brumbies, just to name a few – and many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
10. Tourist Attractions
Last but not least, let’s not forget the unique tourist destinations found in Australia.
Some of these signs can lead tourists to nearby lizard farms and aboriginal establishments. Truly Australian, don’t you think?
