From the President...

August 2008

Another club year, another year with yours truly as President! I know I’m the only person willing to stand for this position, but that doesn’t mean that I will take it lightly as I am proud to hold this title of such an enduring club with so much history.

Early this month, we held our annual dinner at the Strata Bar in Flinders St, which is managed by a new club member, Benjamin Bruce. Unfortunately Ben was sick on the night, but the 29 of us who attended had a very enjoyable evening. The venue, food and service were excellent, and it was a great opportunity to catch up with past & present members. It was interesting to note that Life Member, Len Miller, was celebrating joining the club 50 years ago! Good to see you Len, along with many other Life Members who came along, The annual awards were presented with the usual suspects taking home the glassware. Congratulations to Becky Southam for taking out the Ladies Championship – looks like the passing of the baton from her mother. Thanks again to Ben for suggesting the venue – I’m sure we’ll look at booking it again next year.

On a cool and damp evening in July, we had a cruise through the Hills, followed by a pie (or2) at Vili’s. There were a total of 10 cars including a beautiful Karmann Cabriolet Beetle owned by Ben. It’s all white and in very good nick. Originally from Beverley Hills, it was imported privately into Sydney and converted to RHD. You should have been on the run to see it!

On the motorsport front, our events at Monarto in July went very well, thanks mainly to Henny, John, James & Phil who put in a lot of work before & after. With over 30 entries on Sunday, it was impressive that we managed 5 runs – all of which were very enjoyable. With 2 events in 3 weeks at Tailem Bend to finish off the Khanacross series, the Beast will have to be at its best to register some good results, so that I can keep Paul Kennedy at bay in his buggy!

On the 31st of this month, there is a run to the Historical Military Vehicles Museum. Details appear in this magazine, so I hope I will see you opposite Tea Tree Plaza for a short drive through the hills to Gawler, then onto the museum for a BBQ lunch provided by our club.

Approaching very fast is the Royal Show, which I hope you are aware that we are involved with on the last Saturday (Sept. 13th). If you haven’t already informed me of your intention to attend, please give me a call as there are a few vacancies for our display. It should be a great day – there is no need for you to stay long with our display, you can just check out the Show and leave around 6pm. Hope to hear from you soon.

Looking ahead to next year, the committee has decided to venture down to Russell’s Pizza at Willunga again early in the new year, so those of you who enjoyed a great night  a couple of years ago, stay tuned for more details.
